Who says data analysis is dull?

When Facebook intern Paul Butler told people he was busy plotting the relationships between 500 million people to present them visually on a chart, most people looked at their watches, made their excuses and left the room.

However, the people who decided to stay were in for a real treat.

Paul decided to plot Facebook users by location using longitude and latitude then plotted 'interactions' between users.

The final results were stunning.

Butler found that the interactions not only resembled the continents of the world but also picked out political boarders.

The final image is a stunningly beautiful map of global communications.

You can find out more about the project here or check out a large version of the image here as these smaller images don't really do it justice.
